The Captain kept a steady paw on the ship’s wheel as the grand vessel began its descent into the abyss.  The lifeboats, long since deployed, offered only distant murmurs, drowned heavily by the anguished cries of the unfortunate souls who remained onboard.

History would note a cacophony of errors that lead to the ill-fated finale.  Excessive speed, poorly designed rivets and simple hubris were among the chief causes presented several months later at the official inquiry.  “Arrogance and Incompetence Dooms ‘Unsinkable’ Ship,” the headlines would read.

But Captain Leia knew the truth, a certainty she would take to her watery grave. Yes, human conceit and structural malfeasance did play a crucial role in the disaster and perhaps addressing any one of those issues might’ve lessened the damage.  But, quite simply, this whole thing could’ve been avoided had someone not shined a red laser directly on that damned iceberg.
