As the house lights dimmed, Maddy was uncertain of what to expect. Felines prancing around in fur-tight human suits will, no doubt, be a spectacle worth watching and the musical numbers have been sung from back alleys to bodegas, so it’s bound to be entrancing.

But how, she wondered, could there be much of a story beyond the first act with each character having only one life?
